Working Principle

The turbocharger is connected to the exhaust manifold of the engine. The exhaust gas discharged from the cylinder drives the turbine to rotate, similar to a gas turbine. The turbine is connected by a shaft to the compressor installed between the air filter and the suction pipe. The compressor compresses air into the cylinder. Exhaust from the cylinders flows over the turbine blades, causing the turbine to spin. The more exhaust that flows over the blades, the faster the turbine spins. At the other end of the shaft that connects to the turbine, a compressor pumps air into the cylinders. A compressor is a centrifugal pump that draws in air at the center of the vanes and throws it outside as it spins.

Classification of turbocharging systems

The turbo system is divided into a single turbo system and a twin turbo system.

Single turbo

The supercharging system with only one turbo is a single turbo system. In addition to the turbocharger, the turbocharging system also includes an intake bypass valve, an exhaust bypass valve and an exhaust bypass valve control device.

Twin turbo

The twin-turbo system of the six-cylinder petrol-injected engine. Among them, two turbochargers are arranged in parallel in the exhaust pipe. According to the working order of the cylinders, cylinders 1, 2, and 3 are used as one group, and cylinders 4, 5, and 6 are used as another group. The exhaust of three cylinders in each group is driven a turbocharger. Because the exhaust intervals of the three cylinders are equal, the supercharger turns smoothly. In addition, grouping the three cylinders into groups prevents exhaust interference between the cylinders. In addition to the turbocharger, intake bypass valve, exhaust bypass valve and exhaust bypass valve control device, the system also includes intercooler, resonance chamber and boost pressure sensor.
