The starter is also called a motor. It converts the electrical energy of the battery into mechanical energy and drives the flywheel of the engine to rotate to start the engine.

Starters are classified into DC starters, gasoline starters, compressed air starters, etc. according to their working principles. Most of the internal combustion engines use DC starters, which are characterized by compact structure, simple operation and easy maintenance. The gasoline starter is a small gasoline engine with a clutch and a transmission mechanism. It has high power and is less affected by the temperature. It can start a large internal combustion engine and is suitable for alpine regions. Compressed air starters are divided into two categories, one is to drive compressed air into the cylinder in the order of work, and the other is to use a pneumatic motor to drive the flywheel. The purpose of compressed air starter is close to that of gasoline starter, and is usually used to start large internal combustion engines.

Starter installation

First clean the armature and external drive mechanism with gasoline. After cleaning, check whether the drive is flexible; when installing, apply graphite grease between the friction plates of the friction clutch, and apply organic oil to the threaded filament part; the starter is installed on the engine, and the distance between the end face of the driving gear and the plane of the flywheel 3— 5 mm is appropriate to ensure that the gears mesh correctly.
