The entire piston can be divided into three parts: piston crown, piston head and piston skirt.

When the engine is working, the piston will bend and deform due to the gas pressure in the cylinder. After the piston is heated, there is more metal at the piston pin, so its expansion is greater than other places. In addition, the piston will also produce squeeze deformation under the action of side pressure. As a result of the above deformation, the cross section of the piston skirt becomes an ellipse with the major axis in the direction of the piston pin.
