Function of Camshaft

The camshaft is a component in a piston engine. Its function is to control the opening and closing of the valve.

The main body of the camshaft is a cylindrical rod approximately the same length as the cylinder block. Several cams are set on it for driving valves. The camshaft is supported in the camshaft bearing hole through the camshaft journal, so the number of camshaft journals is an important factor affecting the stiffness of the camshaft support. If the stiffness of the camshaft is insufficient, it will be bent and deformed during operation, which will affect the valve timing.

The sides of the cam are egg-shaped. The purpose of its design is to ensure sufficient intake and exhaust of the cylinder. In addition, considering the durability of the engine and the smoothness of operation, the valve cannot produce too much impact due to the acceleration and deceleration process in the opening and closing action, otherwise it will cause serious wear of the valve, increased noise or other serious consequences. Therefore, there is a direct relationship between the cam and the engine's power, torque output and smoothness of operation.

Camshaft Classification

According to the number of camshafts, it can be divided into two types: single overhead camshaft (SOHC) and double overhead camshaft (DOHC). Single overhead camshaft means there is only one camshaft, and double overhead camshaft means there are two, which is too straightforward to explain. The single overhead camshaft uses a camshaft on the cylinder head to directly drive the intake and exhaust valves. It has a simple structure and is suitable for high-speed engines. In the past, the side-mounted camshaft was generally used, that is, the camshaft was on the side of the cylinder and was directly driven by the timing gear. In order to convert the rotation of the camshaft into the reciprocating motion of the valve, a valve lifter must be used to transmit power. Like this, there are many reciprocating parts, and the inertial mass is large, which is unfavorable for the high-speed movement of the engine. Moreover, the slender tappet has certain elasticity, which is easy to cause vibration, accelerate the wear of parts, and even make the valve out of control. The overhead double camshaft is equipped with two camshafts on the cylinder head, one is used to drive the intake valve and the other is used to drive the exhaust valve. The use of double overhead camshafts does not have high requirements on the design of the camshaft and valve springs, and is especially suitable for the hemispherical combustion chamber with V-shaped configuration of the valves, and is also convenient for use with the four-valve valve train.
